Course outline

Nuclear Medicine Technologists are medical radiation practitioners specialising in taking high quality diagnostic images that show how the body is functioning. Very small amounts of radioactive materials (radiopharmaceuticals) are either inhaled, digested, or injected to show how organs are functioning. Specific imaging equipment such as gamma cameras detect these radiopharmaceuticals providing real-time images of biological processes occurring.

Year 1 is an introduction to the use of radiation in the diagnosis and treatment of patient conditions, anatomy and physiology, radiation interactions, good patient care and a sense of professional identity, strengthened by 3 weeks of placement in semester 2. Your studies then become more specific to Nuclear Medicine, including an additional 48 weeks of placement with 2 x 12-week blocks in final year.

Note

This course is delivered via an embedded service model. Students will be partnered with Health partners across Queensland where they will also complete their clinical placements. Students will learn in a hybrid model with most study completed online. All students will be required to attend the RMIT Bundoora Campus for an intensive week long workshop in Year 1 and 2.

Majors

Anatomy and Physiology, Theranostics application of Nuclear Medicine in the treatment of diseases, advanced imaging applications (CT, MRI, Ultrasound, PET/CT and SPECT), nuclear medicine imaging technologies and techniques and the underlying physics associated with them, pathology recognition, patient care and communication skills.

Other requirements

Students must successfully seek acceptances at one of our many health care partners prior to seeking entry into the course. See Bachelor of Medical Radiation

Graduates can also seek employment across the private and public health care sector across Australia.

Membership

The course has been designed to align with the Medical Radiation Practice Accreditation Committee (MRPAC) standards for education providers.
